Over 800,000 university students are using Kakao's Talk Student ID as of the fourth quarter of 2023, with the company partnering with more universities to allow additional students to use the feature.
Kakao partnered with a further 21 universities in February to allow their students to use the Talk Student ID, according to the company on Wednesday.
Universities such as Seoul National University and Inha University are part of the 21 added to the list. Students from over 400 universities can now use the Talk Student ID and the full list can be found on Kakao's website.
Talk Student ID is a feature added to the KakaoTalk application in May last year. Users can register their student ID on KakaoTalk, using it to verify their student and graduation status.
University students that have the Talk Student ID can get student discounts on Kakao Talk Shopping and at brands such as Daiso, McDonald's, Emart 24 and Gongcha.
Both Korean and international students can use the Talk Student ID, although those who made their Kakao Talk account with an overseas phone number won't be able to do so.
Users need to be full-time students at a Korean university and have Kakao's digital ID certificate, which requires a Korean phone number and a Korean bank account. The user's name registered on the university system and Kakao's digital ID certificate must also be the same.
